Once a year swallows migrate south to spend the winters in a warmer climate. It is believed that they navigate long distances by carrying a kind of biological compass that helps them follow Earth's magnetic field. By observing the rotation of the stars around the North Star at night, they learn to locate north before they embark on their first migration.
